Epic Games confirm Unreal Gold & Unreal Tournament are available to Download for FREE
As an 80s kid growing up in the 90s, First Person Shooter (FPS) games were ones I played ALOT (yes, more than FIFA!). Whether it be Doom, Quake, Half Life (arguably one of the best games of all time) and Unreal were my go to; and the likes of Quake and Unreal bought the idea of “LAN parties” between my friends and I.
With that said, the news from Epic Games really bought a smile to my face. Epic Games confirmed they have given permission to OldUnreal to host installers for Unreal Gold & Unreal Tournament on their website for free.
Who Are OldUnreal?
OldUnreal is a non-profit team of individuals who have been dedicated to keeping Unreal Engine 1 games alive. The team, for Unreal, have provided new maps, mods, textures and skins to players world wide in a bid to keep the titles alive and kicking.
What Does This Mean?
With Epic Games allowing OldUnreal to host the installers for both games, it means gamers can download the original version of the game; then, after running OldUnreal’s patches, the game will be able to run on machines running Windows 7 and later. This will eliminate the need to setup applications like DosBox or setting up a local Virtual Machine running Windows 95/98.
As retro gamers who are wanting to keep our memories lasting a little longer, it’s great to see gaming companies help out their fans. It’s not often we see such kind gestures from companies as, whilst we can appreciate the gaming world is a business, this was one which made us realise the gaming community is listened to.
Currently, the install files are only Windows based and the team are working on a Linux solution. For more information about both games, head over to OldUnreal
